Considering starting a blog in 2025? You need to know the pros and cons first to help you decide if it’s the right choice for you! Here are the key advantages and disadvantages of blogging in 2025.
Blogging can be an incredibly lucrative, flexible, and rewarding career – but it’s not without its challenges. Blogging isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. It requires self-motivation, hard work, and a willingness to invest in both time and resources.
If you’re considering starting a blog in 2025, it’s important to understand both the upsides and the downsides. In this article, I’ll take you through the key advantages and disadvantages of blogging to help you decide if it’s the right choice for you.

The advantages of blogging in 2025
1. Potentially huge earning potential
Many successful bloggers earn six-figure incomes, and some even go beyond that. In fact, it’s not uncommon for bloggers to earn ten times what they might earn in a ‘normal’ job.
Take me as an example: I now earn more in a month than I used to make in an entire year in my old career as an English teacher.
And the best part? There’s no limit to how much you can earn. The more you grow your blog, the more you can earn.

2. Very low startup costs
Starting a blog is much cheaper than launching most other types of businesses…
For example, if you were starting a café or a shop, you’d be looking at spending thousands before you’d even opened the doors, with no guarantee of success.
Whereas with a blog, you can get started for as little as $100.

3. Many monetization possibilities
There are so many ways to make money from blogging:
- Ads: Once your traffic grows, ads can provide a steady income stream.
- Affiliate Marketing: Recommend products and earn a commission on every sale.
- Sponsored Content: Brands pay you to promote their products.
- Digital Products: Create and sell ebooks, online courses, or printables.
- Services: Offer coaching, consulting, or freelance work.
Better still, you can mix and match these methods to suit your niche and audience.

4. Passive income potential
One of the most exciting things about blogging is the ability to earn money while you sleep!
Once you’ve put in the hard work upfront – creating high-quality content, optimizing for search engines, creating products and sales funnels – you can reap the rewards for months and years to come.

5. Be your own boss
Say goodbye to long commutes, office politics, rigid schedules, endless meetings, constant deadlines and your boss always looking over your shoulder.
As a blogger, you are your own boss! You decide what you work on, when you work, where you work and how much you work.
6. Flexible working
Whether you want to work from a café, your couch, or a beach halfway around the world, blogging makes it possible. Blogging gives you the freedom to work from anywhere, at any time.
7. Rewards hard work
In most traditional jobs, no matter how hard you work, your salary stays the same. Blogging is completely different. Blogging truly rewards effort and consistency. The harder you work, the more you are likely to earn.
8. Do a job you love
Say goodbye to Sunday night dread! Blogging allows you to work on things you’re passionate about every single day. If you love what you do, it never feels like work!
9. Help people
Blogging isn’t just about earning money; it’s about making a difference. There’s nothing more rewarding than receiving messages from readers saying your advice helped them solve a problem or even changed their life!
10. No need to be ‘techie’
You don’t need to be a coding wizard or have a computer science degree to run a successful blog. If you can shop online, send emails, use social media and follow tutorials, you have all the tech skills you need. Everything else can be picked up as you go along! And blogging platforms and tools are more user-friendly than ever in 2025.
11. You own it
Unlike building a YouTube channel or a social media channel, a blog is yours. You 100% own it. No one can take it away from you or shut it down.
12. Establish yourself as an expert
Blogging helps you build authority and go-to expert status in your niche, which can lead to speaking gigs, collaborations, and other opportunities.
13. Create ‘dream’ opportunities
Blogging has a way of leading to the unexpected. From brand partnerships to media appearances, many bloggers find themselves getting dream opportunities they never imagined possible.
14. You’re building an valuable asset
When you start a blog, you are building more than a business, you are creating a tangible, sellable asset. A well-established blog can be sold for a significant sum (often 6 or 7 figures) giving you a nice exit strategy if you ever decide to move on.

The disadvantages of blogging in 2025
1. You have to work hard
Blogging isn’t a get rich quick scheme. You need to put in consistent effort, especially in the early days – writing content, promoting it, engaging with readers, creating products, building sales funnels and optimizing for SEO.
(That said, if you do put in the effort up front, you can take your foot off the gas a little once your blog is established and your blog can be a reliable source of semi-passive income for years to come.)

2. It takes time
Building a blog that generates a full-time income doesn’t happen overnight. It often takes six months to start earning anything and over a year to get to a steady, reliable full-time income.

3. Intense competition
Look I am not going to sugarcoat it. If you start a blog in 2025, you’ll be up against bloggers who’ve been doing this it for years, who have a team, and who have deep pockets for content creation and promotion.
That’s not to say it’s impossible. It is 100% possible to start a successful blog in 2025, but you’ll need a rock solid strategy and a willingness to persevere for several months before you start seeing results.
4. Requires investment
While starting a blog is a very low-cost way to start a business, it’s not ZERO cost. You do need to be willing to invest at least a small sum of money if you want to start a successful and profitable blog.
And the more you invest, the faster you’re likely to succeed. For example, investing in quality hosting, a professional theme, SEO and site speed tools, professional email marketing software and courses to fast track your blog will make a big difference.
5. You need to be a self-starter
No one is going to tell you to get out of bed and start work. No one is going to tell you to stop procrastinating and get back to work. And no one is going to tell you off if you spend half the day watching Netflix.
But if you don’t work, your blog will fail and you will never make any money. If you’re not self-motivated and if you don’t have discipline to work on your blog even when you don’t feel like it, blogging is not the right choice for you.
6. You can’t write about anything and everything
A successful blog requires a business mindset. You can’t just write about whatever you feel like writing about. To succeed, you need to be strategic. That includes choosing a profitable niche, conducting keyword research, targeting low-competition keywords, creating content that truly helps readers, and actively monetizing that content.
7. A steep learning curve
From SEO and keyword research to email marketing, sales funnels and analytics, there’s a lot to learn. Blogging requires you to wear many hats and constantly learn new skills.
If you love learning new things and juggling multiple projects then that’s great, but if not then blogging almost certainly isn’t the right choice for you.
8. You need to be organized and goal-focused
Without a rock solid plan and the discipline to carry out that plan, it’s easy to spend hours on tasks that don’t move the needle for your blog.

9. It can be lonely
Working from home means fewer face-to-face interactions and many bloggers report feeling lonely. While online communities help a lot, it’s not quite the same as chatting with co-workers over coffee.
10. Trolls and mean comments
Although it happens a lot less than new bloggers fear, trolls and negative comments do happen from time to time and can be upsetting.
11. Your friends and family won’t always understand
Not everyone ‘gets’ blogging. All too often people think it’s just a hobby and some may even ask you ‘When are you going to get a real job?’. Be prepared for confusion or scepticism from those who just don’t get it.
12. Uncertain income
Blogging can be highly lucrative, but it’s not guaranteed. Plus you need to be prepared for the fact that your income is likely to fluctuate a lot, with seasonality and/or algorithm changes.
If you want to be successful, you’ll need to the kind of person who is willing to embrace change and pivot when needed.
13. Algorithm dependence
Your traffic (and income) often depend on platforms like Google, Pinterest, or social media. When algorithms change, it can impact your income overnight.

14. Burnout risk
Blogging can be all-consuming if you’re not careful. It’s easy to overwork yourself, especially in the early days when you’re trying to grow quickly.

Conclusion: Is Blogging Worth It?
While blogging has its disadvantages, the advantages far outweigh them – if you’re the right kind of person.
If you’re disciplined, organized, resilient, and willing to learn, blogging offers freedom, flexibility, and a job you look forward to starting every morning.
But blogging not for everyone – if you are not willing to put in the work, invest in your blog, persevere through the challenges and stay consistent until you start seeing success, then blogging is not for you.
However, if you are willing to put in the work, blogging can be a hugely rewarding and lucrative career.
