What is a lead magnet?

Put simply, a lead magnet is a freebie you offer in exchange for someone’s email address.

You want that person’s email address because you want to sell them a digital product, like an ebook or an online course, in the future.

It’s called a lead magnet because it’s a free offer designed to attract ‘leads’.

‘Leads’ are people who you have identified as being ideal customers for your paid products.

A ‘lead magnet’ is sometimes known as an ‘opt-in offer’. But really a lead magnet is a specific kind of opt-in offer. An opt-in offer is a generic catch-all term for any type of freebie that gets people onto your email list.

A lead magnet is specifically about getting the RIGHT people onto your email list – people who are likely to buy your paid products in the future.

Why you need a lead magnet?

You may be wondering – why on earth do I need a lead magnet? Why not sell my digital products directly via my website or social media?

Well, that is possible. Some people, when they land on your website or see your social media posts, will be 100% ready to buy and will click the BUY NOW button as soon as they see it.

But the vast majority of people won’t be 100% ready to buy when they first stumble across you.

They may not realise they even have a problem
They may think the solution to their problem is something else
They may think their problem is unsolvable
They may see your paid product but not realize that it would be the perfect solution to their problem
Or they may not believe it would work for them
Or they may doubt that it would work at all.
Or they may simply not know, like or trust you enough to hit the BUY NOW button

A lead magnet gets people onto your email list. From there you can start nurturing each new lead with a dedicated New Subscriber Nurture Sequence.

This nurture sequence will help your new lead to see they have a problem, that their problem can be fixed by your digital product and that your digital product will work for them.

Crucially, a well-crafted nurture sequence will also help your new lead to know, like and trust you enough to hit the BUY NOW button!
