Imagine a world in which you are no longer worried when Google announce yet another update.
Imagine a world in which you no longer care about ‘monthly pageviews’.
Imagine a world in which, instead of dancing to Google’s every new tune, churning out cookie cutter blog posts, stripping back your blog design to the bare bones in the name of Core Web Vitals, all while staring in disillusionment at lacklustre pageviews and RPMs… your blog becomes a place of joy again… writing blog posts becomes a joy again…
Sounds like a dream, right? But all of this is possible if you embrace the Email+Products model of blogging.
The Email+Products model of blogging gives you a stronger, more stable, more reliable business where you are in control and no longer at the mercy of Google’s latest whim… no longer reliant on ‘borrowed traffic’… and no longer looking at your Google Analytics dashboard through one eye for fear of what you might find there…
The old model is broken…
Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently you’ll know that:
a) Google has rolled out some pretty big updates recently
b) A lot of bloggers have been hit hard by these updates – even bloggers who were doing everything ‘right’
One of the big things this has highlighted is how precarious the Google+Ads model of blogging is.
The bloggers who are really hurting are bloggers who depend on Google for the majority of their traffic, and ads (or affiliates) for the majority of their income.
This model is inherently precarious because one small tweak to the Google algorithm and your income could HALVE overnight (or worse!)
You are literally at the mercy of Google… and you don’t need me to tell you that being completely dependent on Google for your entire livelihood is not a sensible long-term business model.
Even if you didn’t get hit this time, you’ve got to be worried about next time.
So what’s the solution?
A lot of focus right now is on carefully reading everything Google has said about the kind of content they want to promote in their algorithm and auditing your website and content accordingly to ensure you stay in (or get back in) Google’s good graces.
And that’s definitely a good idea. When you get it right, Google is still an amazing source of traffic. You might as well make hay while the sun shines!
But it still doesn’t solve the bigger problem… that of being completely dependent on Google for your entire livelihood.
If you are completely at the mercy of Google for the majority of your income, all it takes is one algorithm change and you could be wiped out.
So what is the answer?
The answer is to embrace Email+Products model of blogging.
How does that help?
The Email+Products model of blogging is what I teach in my membership, the Digital Product Success Academy.
But here’s the short version…
Why email?
- Your email list is the only source of traffic you truly own (every other traffic source is ‘borrowed’)
- Email marketing converts casual visitors to your website into repeat visitors and superfans
- Subscribers tell their friends and family about your website, casual visitors do not
- Subscribers go direct to your website rather than via Google, casual visitors do not
- Subscribers buy your digital products, casual visitors do not
Why products?
- Digital products is the only passive income source you have total control over
- Digital products deliver far higher RPMs than ads or affiliates (roughly 10x the RPMs on average)
- This means that you need far less traffic to achieve the same income
- Any time you want to increase your overall revenue, you can simply create a new product
- Any time you want a quick injection of cash, you can run a launch or a flash sale
- With digital products there is a pretty much direct correlation between how hard you work and how much money you earn
- When you sell digital products, Google traffic is largely irrelevant, what matters is the size and quality of your email list
