Do you really need yet another blog post?

Many bloggers diligently write a new blog post every week. But is churning out blog post after blog post actually HARMING your blogging business? Do you really need YET ANOTHER blog post?
How many new blog posts do you produce per month?
2? 4? 8?
If you are like most bloggers, you probably aim to create a certain number of blog posts per month… Most bloggers take it as read that creating new blog posts is, well, part of the job description, and spend the majority of their time creating content.
But have you ever stopped to think whether creating yet another blog post is the BEST possible use of your time?
Or, to put it another way, have you ever considered whether all, or part, of the time you spend writing blog posts could be better spent on something else?
All too often, bloggers and online business owners churn out blog post after blog post, week in week out, without ever considering if that is actually the best way to help them reach their goals. Or whether, in fact, spending less time on blog posts and more time on other blogging related activities would get them to their goals faster.
In fact, in my experience, most bloggers spending FAR TOO MUCH TIME creating content and FAR TOO LITTLE TIME on things that would move the dial a whole lot more.
For example, let’s say that your ultimate goal is to 10x your blogging income.
One of the easiest ways to achieve that is to diversify into digital products. But so many bloggers tell me that they would love to create a digital product, but they don’t have the time… But when we drill down into WHY they don’t have enough time, it’s because they are spending 90% of their time creating content (and the rest on social media!)
Maybe that’s true for you too?
But what if you took a few months off creating new content and instead spent that time creating a digital product and an evergreen sales funnel? You could go back to regularly creating new content after that, if you wanted to… but the difference is, you’d now be able to make a lot more money from your content!
(Recent research search shows that bloggers who monetize via digital products achieve RPMs over 10 times higher than bloggers who monetize via ads and/or affiliates.)
Lack of strategy
One of the biggest reasons why so many bloggers just churn out blog post after blog post, week in/week out without even really thinking about whether it’s the BEST use of their time, is simply because the they’ve never stopped to think about the bigger picture – what they truly want to achieve from their blogging business.
One thing that I teach in my signature program Profitable Productivity is how to do that strategic high-level thinking of identifying your Big Why and your Big Picture Goals, and then evaluating all the possible ways of achieving those goals to decide which tasks and activities will move the dial the most.
The truth is that ‘content creation’ is only one way of moving the dial and, for most bloggers, there are other options that would help them achieve their Big Picture Goals much faster.
But until you’ve done the work to identify your Big Picture Goals and evaluate ALL the possible options for achieving your goals, you cannot possibly know if content creation IS indeed the best way to achieve your goals… or if there’s something else that would give you more bang for your buck!

Looking to the future
Another reason why many bloggers and online business owners spend so much time on content is because there IS a strong correlation between number of blog posts and ad RPMs. If your main income source is ads, then generally the more blog posts you create, the traffic you get and the more money you make… which makes sense, but only up to a point!
Firstly, what would happen to your blogging business if the next Google update decimates your traffic? Or ad RPMs take a sudden tumble? Or cookiepocalypse is as bad as some people are predicting? Focusing solely on ad income is an incredibly precarious business model!
And secondly, ads – by their very nature – will always bring in less money that selling products… This is down to the fundamentals of how advertising works…
A company that pays for advertising will always want to pay LESS to advertise their product that they will make from selling their product. Usually considerably less.
If you’re getting paid for ads on your site (or affiliate referrals for that matter), that means some other business is making more money from your traffic than you are. Otherwise they wouldn’t be paying for those ads.
Selling your own products cuts out the middle man. By creating your own products, you get to be the one who gets the biggest benefit from YOUR OWN traffic!

A better solution…
If you are thoroughly fed up with producing blog post after blog post and not seeing a good enough return for all your hard work, then maybe it’s time to change your strategy?
Making money from a blog has become harder, more competitive, less passive and less reliable over the last few years… And increased competition, together with future threats to ad RPMs and affiliate income, make the current model of blogging ever more precarious and ever harder to win at.
But what if there was an alternative? What if it was possible to make good money from blogging without having to constantly feed the content monster, without having to write cookie cutter blog posts on topics that don’t light you up, and without living in fear of the next Google update?
What if it was possible to focus the majority of your time and efforts on the things that light you up, on serving your people and on building your community?
