Everyone is talking about AI and ChatGPT right now. But how can you harness the benefits of AI – like increased productivity and less time spent on boring routine tasks – while avoiding the potential pitfalls? Hanelore Dumitrache – author of AI for Food Bloggers and food blogger at SugarYums – shares her expert tips and advice.
Why should food bloggers use AI? What are the benefits?
Like most food bloggers, I’m sure you’ve faced the dilemma all too well – too many tasks and not enough hours in the day. AI is a powerful tool that can be used to relieve some of the pressure and help streamline your workflow. It can act almost like a virtual assistant, and help you reduce time spent on writing new posts, optimising for SEO, brainstorming, social media captioning and more.
By leveraging AI, you can reduce the time spent on lengthy tasks to allow you more space for growth, creativity and efficiency.
What can food bloggers use AI for?
AI can be used for many different tasks in food blogging. Hands-down the most important one is using AI as a writing tool for blog posts. When used correctly, AI can save you a lot of time in drafting new posts, updating old content or optimising existing posts for SEO.
You can also use it as a sparring partner, to brainstorm new recipe ideas for either your blog or social media. It can help you come up with social media captions, hashtags and growth strategies.
Another helpful use for AI is image generation, which can enhance existing images or generate entirely new visuals for your posts. New softwares are being developed which can also edit or create video content, so the possibilities are endless!
What are some of the potential pitfalls of using AI?
The biggest hurdle for food bloggers using AI is maintaining their unique voice and authenticity. We all strive to create a loyal audience, so being true to our style and consistency are key. When used correctly and responsibly, AI is very good at generating content in your unique writing style, using knowledge and information coming from you.
For example, using vague prompts such as “write a blog post about X” will result in a very generic blog post, which will fall short in terms of authenticity. Also, if someone uses the exact same prompt as you, chances are their AI generated article will be very similar to yours. In return, this can lead to penalties from Google and your article not ranking.
This is why it’s so important to learn how to use AI responsibly and use it as a tool to improve your writing, not replace your creativity and expertise.
Tell us about your book ‘AI for food bloggers’ – who is it written for and what does it cover?
AI for Food Bloggers is a comprehensive 90-page ebook created specifically for food bloggers wanting to use AI in their workflow. It’s useful for both beginners and more advanced AI users, covering everything you need to know about ChatGPT for writing.
The book covers topics such as setting up and using ChatGPT, maintaining or personalising your unique writing voice, SEO optimisation with AI and other time-saving tips and tricks.
Using ‘AI for Food Bloggers’ you’ll learn how to write advanced prompts (instructions) for the most accurate responses, create custom templates and best practices for using AI responsibly. I also place a lot of emphasis on ethics and transparency, so these are also discussed in the book.
Why did you write it?
As a food blogger myself, I know the struggles of the industry all too well. Everything takes time, and when you’re a one person band, time is of essence. Unfortunately, with AI being so new, resources are very limited. So I have spent the last 2 years researching and educating myself on AI, which has significantly improved my workflow and has made me more efficient.
‘AI for Food Bloggers’ is the collection of all the knowledge I’d gained and all the techniques I have developed in my own food blogging journey with AI. So, I wanted to share these resources so food bloggers can use AI in a responsible way and not be scared of it.
How does your book help food bloggers take advantage of AI?
AI for Food Bloggers provides practical and easy to understand AI strategies that anyone can use in their food blogging process. It teaches you everything you need to know, from setting up an account with ChatGPT, to analysing your writing voice and making AI sound like you.
The book also gives detailed examples of prompts, templates and case studies, to make it extra easy to understand.
How does your book help food bloggers avoid the potential pitfalls of AI?
My book teaches food bloggers how to harness the power of AI in their workflow, whilst always retaining their unique style and writing voice. It emphasises the importance of using AI responsibly and teaches you how to maintain consistency and authenticity.
‘AI for Food Bloggers’ places a lot of importance on using AI as a tool to enhance your writing, not to replace your creativity and expertise.
Can you give us one tip from the book that a food blogger could use today?
Treat ChatGPT (or similar tools) as a virtual assistant that has no knowledge of recipe making or blogging. You can’t expect it to write a recipe on its own, nor can you expect it to know how to write a blog post without guidance from you.
Make sure you give AI enough information and context for what you want from it. Remember, the output or response AI gives you is only as good as the prompt you give it. Be clear, concise, provide enough background information and give it examples of your own work.
How do you personally use AI on your food blog / in your business?
I use AI in pretty much most aspects of my workflow. From planning my week, brainstorming new ideas and related keywords, to writing drafts to new posts and optimising existing content that has dropped in ranking. I also use it a lot to check my spelling, write social media captions and even generate alt texts for my images.
However, I always make sure that all expertise and important information comes from me.
Have you seen any tangible benefits of using AI? If so, what?
Like I said earlier, AI for Food Bloggers is based on my own experiments and testing. I used to be notoriously slow at writing blog posts and I’d always go overboard. Using ChatGPT to help with my writing has drastically reduced my writing time, so I am able to produce more content and be more efficient.
A new blog post used to take me 4-5 hours to write, and now with my customised templates it probably takes about 30-45 minutes from start to finish. And the more I do it, the faster it gets, and the more my food blog grows.
Why should a food blogger read your book rather than try to DIY it when it comes to AI?
AI is an incredibly powerful tool, but it’s also very new. ChatGPT has grown in popularity over the last year, so resources about how to use it properly are very limited. Also, food blogging is very different to other types of blogging, and this book is specifically designed for this purpose.
Sure, testing is the mother of all learning, but it takes time. And if being more efficient is your goal, then this book saves you years of trial and error. It provides you with all the knowledge you need to use AI quickly, efficiently and responsibly.
